Chernobyl LifeLine

We are part of a national charity which provides respite and health care visits to the UK for children from Belarus affected by the Cherbobyl nuclear disaster.

In 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded in the world's worst ever nuclear disaster. 70% of the radioactive fallout landed on Belarus, contaminating 25% of its farmland.

As a result of this disaster, the people of Belarus have been plagued by ill health, economic problems and cancer.

Growing children suffer the most. There has been a massive increase in thyroid cancer, and many children suffer illnesses related to weakened immune systems. A month away from the contaminated environment significantly boosts the children's health.
